What is Scaffolding and Types of Scaffoldings – Here’s What You Didn’t Know!

Have you ever wondered just what scaffolding is, and what are the different types of scaffolding that are available?

We live in a world that’s ever-changing. We have developed ways to build higher and higher. In order to reach those towering heights, it’s important for your workers to have a support system to stand on and work from. This support system is what is known as scaffolding. In this article, however, we’re going to take an in-depth look at what is scaffolding and where to rent scaffolding.

What is scaffolding?

Scaffold

By definition, scaffolding refers to a portable structure that serves as a safe platform for workers. This platform doesn’t only provide sufficient space for the workers to stand on but also has enough space to accommodate construction tools.

There are different types of scaffolding available based on the structure and portability features. In addition, scaffolding can be classified according to is use, shape, and assembly. Basically, you need to know which scaffolding type is best for the type of construction assignment at hand.

Scaffoldings are either made of steel or timber. The main idea is to build them strong and stable for the workers to safely move across and stand on the platform.

Basic types of scaffolding

Speaking broadly, there are three basic types of scaffolding.

1. Mobile scaffold
2. Suspended scaffold
3. Supported scaffold

1. Mobile scaffold

Mobile scaffolds are capable of moving easily as a whole unit without having to be taken apart. This type of platform is perfect for those engaged in window-washing and wall-painting of high-rise buildings.

It is important to make sure that the structure complies with the regulatory building authorities’ health and safety occupational guidelines.

2. Suspended scaffold

Suspended scaffolds are those platforms that are supported from an elevated mechanism instead of a base-support. Generally, suspended scaffolds receive support from a reliable cable-and-pulley system.

Suspended scaffolds are used for those heights where a mobile scaffold no more remains feasible or safe. These scaffolds are often visible beside skyscrapers. But they are also used at places where the ground structure isn’t stable enough to hold the ground-support.

3. Supported scaffold

This is the most common type of scaffold. It is set up from the base and needs stable and reliable support which is secured into the ground. This is arguably the safest platform. The problem is that it takes time to set up and disassemble at the end of the job.

Types of scaffolding – based on the design and structure.

In addition to the basic types, there are several other types of scaffolding which exist for specialist use.

1. Birdcage scaffold

These are independent scaffolds featuring over two standards rows. These rows are constructed in both directions. Transoms and ledgers connect these rows.

These platforms are mostly used for work on ceilings or any other work that is done on just one level.

2. Trestle scaffold

Prefabricated trestles, some accessories, and braces are used to assemble a trestle scaffold. This scaffold is popular with plasterers, bricklayers, and painters. The assembly and dismantling of trestle scaffolds don’t usually require a license.

3. Single-pole scaffold

Just one row of standards is constructed in the single-pole scaffold. Ledgers connect the standards. They are built into the wall where the work is done. Ledgers are fixed with the putlogs.

Construction against the structure means that the platform depends on the building which provides support.

4. Special duty scaffold

These are specially designed scaffolds because they have to deal with an extraordinary amount of load which standard scaffolds can’t withstand. Generally, these scaffolds depend on cantilevered support hence assuming the name Cantilevered Scaffold.

In addition, there are hanging-bracket scaffolds which gain support from building frames. Also, inclined load-bearing members support another type of special duty scaffold known as Spur Scaffold.
